Asperger's Syndrome and Giftedness

From time to time, parents ask me "What is the difference between Asperger's Syndrome, Giftedness, and ADHD?" In fact, giftedness, Asperger's Syndrome, and ADHD all have a certain amount of overlap of traits. It is my understanding that Asperger's Syndrome and ADHD may be related disorders and both may be associated with a high IQ. So, I think it is likely that some of the issues that some Aspies have are really due to their typically high IQ's. Certainly, for my children, the methods of intervention recommended for these same issues in normal gifted kids are effective as one piece of the puzzle for my kid.

If you are unfamiliar with the social and emotional issues faced by gifted kids, you can start with Hoagie's Gifted Page: Social/Emotional. For some of my ideas on the topic, here is a letter I wrote attempting to explain my anecdotal understanding of how to tell the difference between Asperger's Syndrome and Giftedness. And for online diagnostic tools, check out O.A.S.I.S. (Online Asperger Syndrome Information and Support). On the menu, there is a selection that says "diagnostic scales". Some people find them useful.
